STANAG 6001 Level 1, JFLT Level 1, and SLP Level 1 all describe the same point on the NATO language proficiency scale: Survival level. Because the STANAG 6001 framework is shared across all 32 NATO member nations, the same 0 to 5 rating applies whether the exam is called STANAG 6001, JFLT (used by the Italian armed forces), or SLP, and the skills required at Level 1 are consistent across all three. They are three names for the same point on the NATO 0 to 5 proficiency scale. STANAG 6001 is the NATO standard itself, SLP (Standardized Language Profile) is the rating that results from testing against it, and JFLT is the specific exam used by the Italian armed forces to award that rating. The skills tested and the standard required at Level 1 are the same across all three.
What does Level 1 (Survival) actually require?
At Survival level you need to understand and produce short, simple language for immediate everyday needs: basic instructions, short messages, and routine operational notices. It is the foundation level tested before Level 2 (Functional) and Level 3 (Professional).
How long does it typically take to prepare for a Level 1 exam?
This depends on your starting English level and how much time you can commit each week. Candidates with limited prior English typically need sustained, structured practice across all six skills rather than a short intensive push, since Level 1 still tests accuracy in basic structures.
Do I need to work through all six skills, or can I focus on my weak areas?
The exam tests Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking directly, with Grammar and Vocabulary underpinning all four. If you already know which skills are weaker, it is efficient to prioritise those, but a quick review of every section is worthwhile since gaps in basic grammar and vocabulary tend to show up across every skill.
