Functional Level

Level 2
Functional Skills

Your complete preparation hub for STANAG 6001 and JFLT Level 2. Work through all six skill areas to develop the functional competence required in professional military and NATO English environments.

STANAG 6001 Level 2, JFLT Level 2, and SLP Level 2 all describe the same point on the NATO language proficiency scale: Functional level. Personnel at this level can handle routine professional tasks, take part in discussion on familiar and general topics, and produce clear written reports and correspondence without relying on simplified language. Because the STANAG 6001 framework is shared across all 32 NATO member nations, the same 0 to 5 rating applies whether the exam is called STANAG 6001, JFLT (used by the Italian armed forces), or SLP, and the skills required at Level 2 are consistent across all three. This hub brings together everything needed to prepare for the exam at Functional level: reading comprehension of longer operational texts, listening practice with extended spoken exchanges, writing structured reports and correspondence, speaking practice for professional exchanges and presentations, the grammar structures tested at this level, and the professional vocabulary required for military and NATO contexts.

What is the difference between STANAG 6001 Level 2, JFLT Level 2, and SLP Level 2?

They are three names for the same point on the NATO 0 to 5 proficiency scale. STANAG 6001 is the NATO standard itself, SLP (Standardized Language Profile) is the rating that results from testing against it, and JFLT is the specific exam used by the Italian armed forces to award that rating. The skills tested and the standard required at Level 2 are the same across all three.

What does Level 2 (Functional) actually require?

At Functional level you need to handle routine professional tasks with confidence: following and contributing to discussion on familiar topics, producing clear structured reports, and operating without relying on simplified language. It sits between Level 1 (Survival) and Level 3 (Professional).

How long does it typically take to prepare for a Level 2 exam?

This depends on your starting level and how much time you can commit each week. Candidates coming from a solid Level 1 typically need structured, skill-by-skill preparation over several months, since Level 2 introduces longer texts and more extended spoken and written tasks.

Do I need to work through all six skills, or can I focus on my weak areas?

The exam tests Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking directly, with Grammar and Vocabulary underpinning all four. If you already know which skills are weaker, it is efficient to prioritise those, but a quick review of every section is worthwhile since Level 2 grammar and vocabulary gaps tend to show up across every skill.
