ExaminerDo you do any sport or physical activity?
CandidateYes, I am quite active. In the military we do physical training every morning — usually running, press-ups, and stretching. Outside of work I play football with a group of friends on Saturday mornings. I also go to the gym twice a week.
ExaminerWhat sport did you play as a child?
CandidateAs a child I played a lot of football. I was in the school team from the age of ten to sixteen. I still play now, though not as competitively. I also tried basketball for a couple of years but football was always my favourite.
ExaminerHow important is physical fitness in your job?
CandidatePhysical fitness is extremely important in the military. We need to be strong and have good stamina to carry heavy equipment, complete long marches, and perform well under pressure. If you are not fit, you cannot do the job effectively.
ExaminerDo you think sport is important for children?
CandidateYes, absolutely. Sport teaches children about teamwork, discipline, and how to deal with winning and losing. It also keeps them healthy and active. I think every child should do some kind of sport or physical activity.
Model DialogueRead the candidate’s lines aloud, then cover and try from memory.

ExaminerWhat is your favourite public holiday?
CandidateMy favourite holiday is Christmas. In Italy it is a very important family celebration. We go to my parents’ house and the whole family gets together — my sister, her children, my grandparents. We have a big dinner on Christmas Eve with traditional food.
ExaminerAre there any special traditions in Italy that you enjoy?
CandidateYes, one tradition I love is the Feast of the Assumption in August. Many towns have local festivals with music, food, and fireworks. It is a wonderful atmosphere and brings the whole community together. I also enjoy Carnival in February — people dress in costumes and there are parades in the streets.
ExaminerHave you ever attended a big wedding?
CandidateYes, my brother got married two years ago. It was a large traditional wedding with over one hundred and fifty guests. The ceremony was in a beautiful old church and the reception lasted until midnight. It was one of the most memorable days of my life.
ExaminerDo you think it is important to keep traditional celebrations alive?
CandidateYes, I do. Traditions connect us to our history and culture. They also bring communities and families together, which is important in modern life when people are often very busy. I hope my children will also value and continue our family traditions.

ExaminerHow do you usually travel to work?
CandidateI usually drive to work because the base is not well connected by public transport. The journey takes about twenty minutes by car. When I am deployed or on exercise I sometimes travel by military vehicle or by plane for longer distances.
ExaminerDo you prefer travelling by car, train, or plane?
CandidateFor short distances I prefer the train because I can read or relax while I travel. For longer journeys I prefer to fly because it is much faster. Driving is good when I want flexibility, but on motorways with a lot of traffic it can be very tiring.
ExaminerHave you ever had a serious problem while travelling?
CandidateYes, once my flight was cancelled because of bad weather. I had to wait at the airport for almost eight hours before I could get another flight. It was very frustrating but there was nothing I could do. I learnt to always bring something to read.
ExaminerDo you think travel is important for personal development?
CandidateYes, I think so. When you travel you meet different people and experience different cultures. It makes you more open-minded and helps you understand the world better. In the military, working with soldiers from other countries has been a very valuable experience for me.

ExaminerWhat do you usually eat in a day?
CandidateFor breakfast I usually have bread, coffee, and sometimes a piece of fruit. Lunch is the biggest meal for me — I try to have something hot like pasta or a meat dish. In the evening I usually have something lighter, like a salad or soup.
ExaminerDo you cook at home? What do you enjoy making?
CandidateYes, I enjoy cooking. My favourite dish to cook is a slow-cooked meat ragù for pasta. It takes a long time but the result is always very good. I learned to cook from my mother and I still use many of her recipes.
ExaminerWhat is a typical dish from your country?
CandidateOne very typical Italian dish is spaghetti carbonara. It is made with pasta, eggs, pancetta, and pecorino cheese. It is very simple but if you use good ingredients it is absolutely delicious. It is one of the most famous Italian dishes in the world.
ExaminerDo you think it is important to eat together as a family?

ExaminerDo you use your phone a lot? What do you use it for?
CandidateYes, I use my phone quite a lot. I mainly use it to call and message my family, check emails, and look things up on the internet. I also use it for maps when I am driving somewhere new. I try not to use it too much in the evenings so I can relax properly.
ExaminerDo you do your banking online or go to the bank?
CandidateI do almost everything online now. I check my balance, pay bills, and transfer money using my bank’s app. I only go to a real bank if I need to do something complicated, like open a new account. Online banking is very convenient and saves a lot of time.
ExaminerHave you ever had a problem with a service?
CandidateYes, once I ordered a parcel online and it never arrived. I had to contact the company and they told me it was lost. It took three weeks to sort out the problem and get a refund. After that I always use tracked delivery for important items.
ExaminerDo you think people are too dependent on their phones?
CandidateYes, I think many people are too dependent on their phones. Some people cannot be without them even for a few minutes. I think it is important to have time away from screens. When I am with my family I try to put the phone away and be fully present.
