Assessment What Examiners Assess at Level 3
Vocabulary & Precision
Near-native command of specialist, technical, and abstract vocabulary is expected. Candidates must deploy precise, contextually appropriate language across military, geopolitical, and professional domains.
Grammar & Complexity
Complex grammatical structures must be used accurately and naturally, including advanced conditionals, nominalisation, passive and impersonal constructions, and sophisticated clause embedding.
Discourse & Coherence
Candidates must independently structure extended discourse with clarity and logic. Signposting, cohesive devices, and the ability to develop, qualify, and summarise arguments are all actively assessed.
Register & Delivery
Formal register must be sustained consistently. Pronunciation, stress, and intonation should reflect those of a near-native speaker and actively support the clarity and authority of the message.
Level 3 Study TipAt Level 3, examiners are assessing your ability to lead and shape the conversation, not just respond. Practise structuring extended answers with a clear position, developed reasoning, and a precise conclusion. Record yourself and ask: does this sound like an expert speaker?
